COMPASS
RESILIENCY SKILLS FOR YOUTH

Compass is our resiliency and self-authoring initiative, woven into every program we offer at no extra cost.

Developed in response to the challenges many youth faced during and after the pandemic, Compass helps young people build emotional strength, reflect on their personal story, set meaningful goals, and take ownership of their future.

A key focus of Compass is Durable Skills — practical life skills that remain valuable even when modern conveniences or technology are unavailable.

The 10 Components of Resilience
Compass is a youth development program focused on building resilience, confidence, and essential life skills that support youth in navigating challenges and reaching their goals. The Compass curriculum is built around 10 core components of resilience—the building blocks that guide our work with youth and help them develop the skills, mindset, and personal strengths needed to navigate challenges, persevere, and grow. Through engaging activities, guided discussions, and hands-on experiences, participants strengthen these areas while developing skills in communication, goal setting, problem-solving, stress management, and self-reflection.
Recognizing that each group of participants has different experiences and needs, the Compass curriculum is intentionally adapted to fit the setting and age group of each program. It supports personal growth and life skills development within Waypoint’s After-School program, while incorporating workforce readiness and professional growth within The Outpost.

Compass in Waypoint's
After-School Program
As a specially crafted aspect of Waypoint’s After-School Program, Compass compensates middle and high school students who participate. Through engaging activities, small-group discussions, coaching sessions, and hands-on challenges, participants build resilience while exploring their strengths, setting goals, managing stress, solving problems, strengthening relationships, and learning to navigate change with confidence. The curriculum is tailored to support personal growth and help young people develop practical skills they can apply at school, at home, and throughout their lives.

Compass in the
Outpost Program
For high school and college-aged participants in The Outpost workforce development program, Compass adopts a work-centered approach while continuing to focus on personal growth and resilience. While the curriculum emphasizes workplace readiness, communication, problem-solving, stress management, and goal setting, its focus extends far beyond employment. Participants are encouraged to recognize their strengths, strengthen relationships, and develop the confidence and skills needed to navigate challenges and succeed both personally and professionally.
